Weight Loss Plateau Beaters - Smash Through Stubborn Fat Loss Plateaus

Is your fat loss progress slowing down? Are you stuck at the same weight, the same body fat, or the same pant size?

Inevitably, everyone comes across a fat loss plateau. For some, it sticks around longer than others, but no matter how long it lasts, a fat loss plateau is always frustrating.

According to Tom Venuto, one way to burst through plateaus is to increase the intensity of your training.

After all, if you aren't getting results, it might simply mean that your training is not stimulating your body to change (so you can't expect last month's program to work again this month - that's why the best workouts always recommend changing your program every 4 weeks).

In addition to changing my client's fat loss programs regularly, we use another training rule every workout to make sure that they are continuing to get results and avoid the dreaded fat loss plateaus.

The rule:

Try to set a personal best in each workout.

Now the personal best can be accomplished in any weight exercise, bodyweight exercise, or even interval/cardio exercise.

For example, for many of my female clients, we are often trying to set new records in different kinds of push-ups and chin-ups. Just Monday I challenged one of my gals to get 15 chest-to-the-floor real pushups. I knew she had it in her. And she did. 15 perfect pushups, smashing her old record by two. It's no surprise she has the best, leanest arms of almost any woman in the gym.

Even in my own workout today, I smashed a personal record in the flat DB chest press, getting 6 reps with the 110 pound dumbbells (my training partner and I had to drive half-way across the city just to find dumbbells that heavy!).

And even if you are having a lousy day, and don't have much energy, you can still try to set a personal record in a low-intensity ab exercise like the plank or side plank.

The great thing is that even with a normal 6-exercise strength and interval workout, there are at least 36 opportunities to set a new personal best.

First, you could set it in any of the 6 exercises.

Second, there are at least 3 ways to do every exercise. So you could have a record for regular push-ups, close-grip pushups, decline push-ups, close-grip decline push-ups, etc.

Third, you can set a repetition record or a weight record. I.e. You could aim to get 2 more reps than last week in your db row exercise, or you could use a heavier dumbbell (all with good form, of course).

So that's at least 36 possible ways to set a record with your strength training. And that doesn't even count the ways that you could set a personal best in your interval training (increasing the distance covered, the time of the interval, the speed of the interval, or the number of intervals). You can even set a new record by completing one of the bodyweight circuits faster than ever.

All it has to be is one personal best per workout. Keep a little spreadsheet at home and record your exercises, all the variations, and your rep record and weight records, and the date on which you set the record. Come back to that every week to update it and motivate yourself for your next workout.

The "personal best" rule will increase your motivation and sense of accomplishment and get you back on the fat loss track. At the end of each workout, you'll know that you still achieved progress - even if the scale hasn't changed in a couple of days.

Hypertension and the Family

Hypertension is known to affect about one billion people worldwide with approximately 7.1 million deaths per year.

The consequences of the disease are serious and adversely affect many end organs like the heart and kidneys. Early diagnosis and institution of appropriate management play important roles in limitation of the morbidity and mortality associated with the disease

Good blood pressure control involves lifestyle modification and drug therapy. However, failure to adhere to therapy is most often present in chronic asymptomatic conditions like hypertension which require long-term treatment. It is also documented that despite the proven benefits of lifestyle modification, these measures are not usually prescribed by physicians and are not being practised by all patients with hypertension. The patients need motivation for effective therapy. Such motivation include social support from family members. Thus effective management requires the concerted effort of the family.

It is most often the family, not the individual or health professionals that decide whether the individual should seek or use health care services or not, hence the World Health Organisation characterised the family as the primary social agent in the promotion of health and well-being. The family plays a major role in various aspects of hypertension management including adherence to medication, lifestyle modification and follow-up visits, hence the need to employ a family-oriented approach in the management of this disease. Studies from various parts of the world have proven that availability of family support especially involving the spouse is known to improve drug adherence resulting in significant reduction in blood pressure and overall mortality amongst hypertensives

It is therefore very important for families of hypertensive patients to be aware of the importance of family involvement in blood pressure control and to make such support available.

High Blood Pressure Headache - Why a Headache is Not a Reliable Symptom For Hypertension

The role of the heart is to pump blood around the body. In doing this, it needs to apply pressure to accomplish the task. The force needed to push the blood is called blood pressure, translated by the level of blood pumped and the number of pumping, as affected by the obstructions the force has to overcome.

If the heart is prevented from circulating all the blood throughout the body, blood pressure elevates. Headache however, is not an immediate effect because it may or may not occur if such an irregularity in blood circulation takes place.

Accordingly, headache as a symptom of high blood pressure happens if a person is coming from a sedentary position of lying down for a number of hours, usually in the morning. The transition from lack of physical activity to an active stance causes the blood to surge forward thereby aggravating the condition of the sufferer. Often, this will be accompanied by a headache.

However, a number of people do not manifest any symptoms and will seek medical intervention only if the condition is already very severe. This is due to the fact that high blood pressure is slow in its progression but constant in producing damages to the blood vessels, heart and other organs of the body that will lead to a serious medical problem.

In an article published by the American Heart Association in the Internet last June 19, 2008, it cited a certain study, which disclosed that hypertension as a disorder does not cause headaches. This pronouncement was based on the findings that during times of having hypertension, the blood vessels become stiff causing the nerve endings to function improperly.

The resulting impairment in nerve endings therefore makes it incapable of sending out pain signals to the brain, thus disqualifying headache as an important symptom of hypertension.

This is why high blood pressure even in its critical level of 180/110 mmHg is not always accompanied by a headache. It is in itself a symptom of an imminent stroke attack without necessarily bringing forth headache. Moreover, the following are the conditions to watch out for in case a person's blood pressure continues to rise:

1. One side of the body experiences a swift numbing or weakness on the face, arm or leg.

2. A person experiences difficulty in speaking and feels confused or disoriented.

3. A person's vision becomes blurred and an eye or both eyes have trouble in focusing at an image.

4. A person loses his sense of balance and coordination unable to walk out of dizziness.

Hypertension accompanied by one or any more of the above-enumerated symptoms is an indication of a possible stroke attack that requires an emergency medical treatment.

Without waiting for other symptoms to appear, raised blood pressure calls for a diet check and lifestyle change. The underlying causes can be reversed if restrictions in sodium, calories, and fat intakes will be implemented.

In addition, known and effective herbal medicines can provide relief by relaxing the arterial blood vessels and arresting the production of stress hormones that interferes in proper blood circulation.

High blood pressure that is left untreated can lead to a heart attack or stroke along with other probable complications like brain damage, kidney failure, loss of vision and at worst heart failure. Persons with known history of hypertension in the family should always have their blood pressures checked as a preventive measure in aggravating any increases in blood pressure levels.
